Belshazzar was confident and prideful to the point he wouldn't repent even when told of his dire future. He was lord unto himself.

I agree with Rod Jacobs and with what Michael said earlier: The demise of King Belshazzar illustrates the truth of Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
