Why would Adam and Eve be afraid of death?

Gen 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned --

Scholars generally agree that death entered the creation as a result of Adam's sin. However, since there was no death at the beginning, how could Adam and Eve be threatened by dying? What would they have known of death at that time that would even get their attention? "Dying, what's that?"

The death that is spoken about in the case of Adam and Eve, isn't a natural death. It's being dead in God. God was letting them know that if they eat off the wrong tree they would surely die (because this tree had satan in). Just like if we once knowing God, turn back to our old sinful life we would very quickly forget God. He wouldn't be able to use us and our hearts would be dead to him. We have to be very careful that we are not carried away by the sins of the flesh.

This is why it's so important that we listen to our conscience. Once we know God, the spirit should be guiding our hearts in everyday life. We shouldn't be purposely sinning anymore. All of us will still sin, but hopefully it will be unintentional, we must then ask God for forgiveness once we realise we've done wrong, and mean it. God judges each of our hearts.

There are 2 deaths in the bible (apart from natural death). There is death to sin which Paul talks about, when he says I die daily (1 corinthians 15:31), then there is death from God. If you walk away and go back to your old ways. It isn't God leaving us because he loves us with all his heart. It's when we turn from him.

In Jude 1:12 He talks about being twice dead. These are people that were dead in the spirit, then they have known God and turned back and are dead again. He says they are clouds without water. A cloud carries water, these are the people of God with the word in their hearts. So once you lose this word you are without water. Without water naturally we die, without God's spirit we spiritually die. But only if we turn away from him.

Read 2 Peter chapter 2. In verse 22 he says that "The dog is returned to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." These are people of God turning back to their old ways. That whole chapter explains this. These are people who proclaim to love God and know him, but live a life of sin. This is the death by which Adam and Eve fell.
