Matthew 23:1-7

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

¹ Then Jesus _t said to the crowds and to his disciples, ² _u "The scribes and the Pharisees _v sit on Moses' seat, ³ so practice and observe whatever they tell you - _w but not what they do. _x For they preach, but do not practice. ⁴ _y They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, ₁ and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ⁵ _t They do all their deeds _z to be seen by others. For they make _a their phylacteries broad and _b their fringes long, ⁶ and they _c love the place of honor at feasts and _d the best seats in the synagogues ⁷ and _d greetings in _e the marketplaces and being called _f rabbi ₂ by others.
