The Covenant Renewed in Moab
These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the a covenant which He made with them in Horeb.
Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: b "You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land -
c "the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders.
"Yet d the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day.
e "And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. f Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.
g "You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.
"And when you came to this place, h Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we conquered them.
"We took their land and i gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh.
"Therefore j keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may k prosper in all that you do.
"All of you stand today before the LORD your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel,
"your little ones and your wives - also the stranger who is in your camp, from l the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water -
"that you may enter into covenant with the LORD your God, and m into His oath, which the LORD your God makes with you today,
"that He may n establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, o just as He has spoken to you, and p just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
"I make this covenant and this oath, q not with you alone,
"but with him who stands here with us today before the LORD our God, r as well as with him who is not here with us today
(for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by,
and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them - wood and stone and silver and gold);
"so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, s whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, t and that there may not be among you a root bearing u bitterness or wormwood;
"and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, 'I shall have peace, even though I follow the v dictates of my heart' - w as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.
x "The LORD would not spare him; for then y the anger of the LORD and z His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the LORD a would blot out his name from under heaven.
"And the LORD b would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the c Law,
"so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they d see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the LORD has laid on it:
'The whole land is brimstone, e salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, f like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and His wrath.'
"All nations would say, g 'Why has the LORD done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?'
"Then people would say: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt;
'for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them.
'Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against this land, h to bring on it every curse that is written in this book.
'And the LORD i uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.'
"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

These are the statutes and judgments and laws which the LORD made between Himself and the children of Israel on Mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.
You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself.
But your eyes have seen every great act of the LORD which He did.
Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
The great trials which your eyes saw, the signs and the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm, by which the LORD your God brought you out. So shall the LORD your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

Now it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the LORD had given him as commandments to them.
And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
"I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'"
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.
But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.
Then Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified.
And I sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying.
So the LORD our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan, with all his people, and we attacked him until he had no survivors remaining.
So Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country.
And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, and half the mountains of Gilead and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites.
The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of the giants.
"Therefore be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'
1 Kings 2:3
And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.
Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
And the rulers said to them, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them.
"Now therefore, you are cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves - woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."
And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, in the place which He would choose, even to this day.
These joined with their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse and an oath to walk in God's Law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and His ordinances and His statutes:
The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.
"Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God."
Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah -
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.
Because finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah -
"For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."
Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them.
Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.
For their vine is of the vine of Sodom And of the fields of Gomorrah; Their grapes are grapes of gall, Their clusters are bitter.
"For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity."
At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.
Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD, "Who take counsel, but not of Me, And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit, That they may add sin to sin.
For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the LORD will answer him by Myself.
O GOD, why have You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?
How long, LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
I will set My jealousy against you, And they shall deal furiously with you; They shall remove your nose and your ears, And your remnant shall fall by the sword; They shall take your sons and your daughters, And your remnant shall be devoured by fire.
And the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
'Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.'
2 Kings 14:27
And the LORD did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
And will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
If you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
I will make this city desolate and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.
Edom also shall be an astonishment; Everyone who goes by it will be astonished And will hiss at all its plagues.
Because of the wrath of the LORD She shall not be inhabited, But she shall be wholly desolate. Everyone who goes by Babylon shall be horrified And hiss at all her plagues.
For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited.
Therefore, as I live," Says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Surely Moab shall be like Sodom, And the people of Ammon like Gomorrah - Overrun with weeds and saltpits, And a perpetual desolation. The residue of My people shall plunder them, And the remnant of My people shall possess them.
Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.
So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
Unless the LORD of hosts Had left to us a very small remnant, We would have become like Sodom, We would have been made like Gomorrah.
And let that man be like the cities Which the LORD overthrew, and did not relent; Let him hear the cry in the morning And the shouting at noon.
How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I set you like Zeboiim? My heart churns within Me; My sympathy is stirred.
1 Kings 9:8
"And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss, and say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?'
"And many nations will pass by this city; and everyone will say to his neighbor, 'Why has the LORD done so to this great city?'
Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.
1 Kings 14:15
For the LORD will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good land which He gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their wooden images, provoking the LORD to anger.
2 Chronicles 7:20
Then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.
