Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and a baptized more disciples than John
(though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),
He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.
But He needed to go through Samaria.
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that b Jacob c gave to his son Joseph.
Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."
For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For d Jews have no dealings with e Samaritans.
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the f gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you g living water."
The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?
"Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"
Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,
"but h whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him i will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
j The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."
Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."
The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband,'
"for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."
The woman said to Him, "Sir, k I perceive that You are a prophet.
"Our fathers worshiped on l this mountain, and you Jews say that in m Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship."
Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming n when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.
"You worship o what you do not know; we know what we worship, for p salvation is of the Jews.
"But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will q worship the Father in r spirit s and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
t "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah u is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, v He will tell us all things."
Jesus said to her, w "I who speak to you am He."
And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why are You talking with her?"
The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men,
"Come, see a Man x who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
Then they went out of the city and came to Him.
In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."
But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."
Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?"
Jesus said to them, y "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to z finish His work.
"Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes a the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, b for they are already white for harvest!
c "And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that d both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
"For in this the saying is true: e 'One sows and another reaps.'
"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; f others have labored, and you have entered into their labors."
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him g because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did."
So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
And many more believed because of His own h word.
Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for i we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."
Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee.
For j Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, k having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; l for they also had gone to the feast.

After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and baptized.
And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified - behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!
1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
And he bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.
The bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel had brought up out of Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in the plot of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for one hundred pieces of silver, and which had become an inheritance of the children of Joseph.
"Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow."
And the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.
Then he said to them, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Genesis 12:6 - 8
Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.
Then Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city.
Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.
Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them: "Listen to me, you men of Shechem, That God may listen to you!
But you shall seek the place where the LORD your God chooses, out of all your tribes, to put His name for His dwelling place; and there you shall go.
Then there will be the place where the LORD your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the LORD.
1 Kings 9:3
And the LORD said to him: "I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built to put My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.
2 Chronicles 7:12
Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: "I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.
Psalms 122:1 - 9
I WAS glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the LORD.
For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations," Says the LORD of hosts.
1 Timothy 2:8
I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
2 Kings 17:28 - 41
Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
Many people shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?
Who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises.
Of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."
Hebrews 13:10 - 14
We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.
For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear.
"Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did.
Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.
But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!
Jesus said to him, " It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.
But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.
The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things.
Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me.
I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart.
Then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second.
I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.
Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Then He said to them, "The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.
But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven - things which angels desire to look into.
"Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.
1 John 4:14
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.
So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.
But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.
Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.
Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed.
