The Broken Covenant
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
"Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
"and say to them, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel: a "Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant
"which I commanded your fathers in the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, b from the iron furnace, saying, c 'Obey My voice, and do according to all that I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your God,'
"that I may establish the d oath which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them e 'a land flowing with milk and honey,' as it is this day." ' " And I answered and said, "So be it, LORD."
Then the LORD said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: 'Hear the words of this covenant f and do them.
'For I earnestly exhorted your fathers in the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, until this day, g rising early and exhorting, saying, "Obey My voice."
h 'Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but i everyone followed the dictates of his evil heart; therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but which they have not done.' "
And the LORD said to me, j "A conspiracy has been found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
"They have turned back to k the iniquities of their forefathers who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them; the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers."
Therefore thus says the LORD: "Behold, I will surely bring calamity on them which they will not be able to escape; and l though they cry out to Me, I will not listen to them.
"Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and m cry out to the gods to whom they offer incense, but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
"For according to the number of your n cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal.
"So o do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry out to Me because of their trouble.
"What p has My beloved to do in My house,
Having q done lewd deeds with many?
And r the holy flesh has passed from you.
When you do evil, then you s rejoice.
The LORD called your name,
t Green Olive Tree, Lovely and of Good Fruit.
With the noise of a great tumult
He has kindled fire on it,
And its branches are broken.
"For the LORD of hosts, u who planted you, has pronounced doom against you for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke Me to anger in offering incense to Baal."
Now the LORD gave me knowledge of it, and I know it; for You showed me their doings.
But I was like a docile lamb brought to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised schemes against me, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, v and let us cut him off from w the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more."
But, O LORD of hosts,
You who judge righteously,
x Testing the mind and the heart,
Let me see Your y vengeance on them,
For to You I have revealed my cause.
"Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the men of z Anathoth who seek your life, saying, a 'Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, lest you die by our hand' -
"therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall b die by famine;
'and there shall be no remnant of them, for I will bring catastrophe on the men of Anathoth, even c the year of their punishment.' "

'Cursed is the one who does not confirm all the words of this law.' "And all the people shall say, 'Amen!'
Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the LORD.
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.
But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance, as you are this day.
1 Kings 8:51
(for they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out of Egypt, out of the iron furnace).
If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them.
The blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today.
"But this is what I commanded them, saying, 'Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.'
And it shall be, when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month.
Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the LORD your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers.
The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac.
'You have given them this land, of which You swore to their fathers to give them - "a land flowing with milk and honey."
So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes.
(for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, 'Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them; then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.' But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me.
Yet they did not obey Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.
This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who follow the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing.
The conspiracy of her prophets in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured people; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst.
As bands of robbers lie in wait for a man, So the company of priests murder on the way to Shechem; Surely they commit lewdness.
1 Samuel 15:11
I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments." And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.
And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me with her whole heart, but in pretense," says the LORD.
Then the LORD said to me, "Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.
But I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols.
They cried out, but there was none to save; Eve...
Then they will call on me, but I will not answe...
When you spread out your hands, I will hide My ...
"When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and...
"Therefore I also will act in fury. My eye will...
Then they will cry to the LORD, But He will not...
Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaim...
He will say: 'Where are their gods, The rock in which they sought refuge?
But we will certainly do whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and saw no trouble.
2 Kings 23:13
Then the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem, which were on the south of the Mount of Corruption, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the people of Ammon.
But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, If they can save you in the time of your trouble; For according to the number of your cities Are your gods, O Judah.
"Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation."
Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me; for I will not hear you.
Then the LORD said to me, "Do not pray for this people, for their good.
1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth.
You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry.
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.
Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked.
But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.
And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree.
He dug it up and cleared out its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, And also made a winepress in it; So He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.
Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality. How then have you turned before Me Into the degenerate plant of an alien vine?
You have planted them, yes, they have taken root; They grow, yes, they bear fruit. You are near in their mouth But far from their mind.
They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.
Then they said, "Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us attack him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.
1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
1 Chronicles 28:9
As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.
Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, But establish the just; For the righteous God tests the hearts and minds.
O LORD, You know; Remember me and visit me, And take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In Your enduring patience, do not take me away. Know that for Your sake I have suffered rebuke.
The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.
If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, Then how can you contend with horses? And if in the land of peace, In which you trusted, they wearied you, Then how will you do in the floodplain of the Jordan?
For even your brothers, the house of your father, Even they have dealt treacherously with you; Yes, they have called a multitude after you. Do not believe them, Even though they speak smooth words to you.
Who say to the seers, "Do not see," And to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
"But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, And commanded the prophets saying, 'Do not prophesy!'
Do not prattle," you say to those who prophesy. So they shall not prophesy to you; They shall not return insult for insult.
For death has come through our windows, Has entered our palaces, To kill off the children - no longer to be outside! And the young men - no longer on the streets!
Therefore their way shall be to them Like slippery ways; In the darkness they shall be driven on And fall in them; For I will bring disaster on them, The year of their punishment," says the LORD.
The days of punishment have come; The days of recompense have come. Israel knows! The prophet is a fool, The spiritual man is insane, Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity.
The best of them is like a brier; The most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge; The day of your watchman and your punishment comes; Now shall be their perplexity.
