Come to Our Help
To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah.
O God, we have heard with our ears,
d our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
e in the days of old:
you with your own hand f drove out the nations,
but g them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but h them you set free;
for not i by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and j the light of your face,
k for you delighted in them.
l You are my King, O God;
m ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through you we n push down our foes;
through your name we o tread down those who rise up against us.
For not in p my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
and have q put to shame those who hate us.
r In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
But you have s rejected us and disgraced us
and t have not gone out with our armies.
You have made us u turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
You have made us like v sheep for slaughter
and have w scattered us among the nations.
x You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
You have made us y the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and z scorn of those around us.
You have made us a a byword among the nations,
b a laughingstock among the peoples.
All day long my disgrace is before me,
and c shame has covered my face
at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of d the enemy and the avenger.
e All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back,
nor have our f steps g departed from your way;
yet you have h broken us in the place of i jackals
and covered us with j the shadow of death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God
or k spread out our hands to l a foreign god,
m would not God discover this?
n For he knows the secrets of the heart.
Yet o for your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
p Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! q Do not reject us forever!
Why r do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
For our s soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
Rise up; t come to our help!
u Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

And Joshua said, "Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
2 Samuel 7:10
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly.

You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land.
He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.
And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow.
But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.
There are many who say, "Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!
And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power.
Deuteronomy 7:7 - 8
It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.
Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
A firstborn bull - he has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall gore the peoples, all of them, to the ends of the earth; they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
I saw the ram charging westward and northward and southward. No beast could stand before him, and there was no one who could rescue from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.
With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.
The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
1 Samuel 17:47
And that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord 's, and he will give you into our hand.

The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!
Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.
Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool!
We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us.
All who pass by plunder him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors.

You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves.
I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a reproach, a byword, a taunt, and a curse in all the places where I shall drive them.
He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit.
I also could speak as you do, if you were in my place; I could join words together against you and shake my head at you.
2 Chronicles 32:21
And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth.
The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.
The insolent utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from your law.
Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies.
My foot has held fast to his steps; I have kept his way and have not turned aside.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
I am a brother of jackals and a companion of ostriches.
Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
Nobles shall come from Egypt; Cush shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God.
If you prepare your heart, you will stretch out your hands toward him.
There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
"I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."
And needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations.
As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord!
But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies.
Why do you hide your face and count me as your enemy?
My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word!
For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.
