The Zeal of Phinehas
And the Lord said to Moses,
"Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he q was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in r my jealousy.
Therefore say, s 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace,
and it shall be to him and to t his descendants after him the covenant of u a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.'"
The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father's house belonging to the Simeonites.
And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of v Zur, who was the tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
w "Harass the Midianites and strike them down,
for they have harassed you with their x wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of y Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor."

1 Chronicles 6:4 - 15
Eleazar fathered Phinehas, Phinehas fathered Abishua.
And anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may serve me as priests. And their anointing shall admit them to a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.
They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. And they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.
That is, all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.
"Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people."
They warred against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every male.
Behold, these, on Balaam's advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the Lord.
But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.
So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the desert.
