Genesis 3:1 - 24

NASB - 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'? 2 The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat.

God created humans in His own image to have a unique fellowship with Him. He had to give them free will, because that was the only way that they could voluntarily choose to love and follow Him, which, in turn, was the only condition under which real love could exist. "Love" that can only be obtained against individual will or through compulsion can never be genuine.

Humans therefore had to be able to make a choice between loving and serving God or not doing so. God knew that this created the possibility of a negative choice, and, as a result of His omniscience, He also knew that humans would fall into sin. But, because God is outside of time, and thus views all events that have ever occurred, or that ever will occur, in "real time", that did not (and still does not) compromise humans' free will, or relieve them of responsibility for their decisions and actions.

A reference that I have found to be helpful in developing an understanding of this concept is C. S. Lewis' discussion in his book Mere Christianity (particularly, Chapters 1-3 of the section of the book titled "What Christians Believe"), which can be fully viewed for free online at pages 21-28 at the following web address:

The heart of God desires an intimate personal relationship with every human being. God is the creator and we are his creation, his offspring. God created humans for his pleasure and to fulfil his plan and purpose for us.

God uses two powerful images throughout the bible to give us a picture of his heart's desire for us. He uses the image of a husband and wife, and the image of a parent and child. God is depicted as the husband and we are his wife, he is pictured as the parent and we are his child.

The husband and wife image is beautifully illustrated in the book of Hosea. Throughout the book, God is pictured as the husband and the nation of Israel as his wife. God uses the relationship of Hosea and his wife as a living parable to show us how much God loves us, is willing to forgive and restore the relationship, and much more.

Why do people want to get married? We have all seen the horror stories of marriages gone bad that lead to great anger and bitterness through divorce. We have also seen some great marriages, blossom, develop and mature, that are filled with love and intimacy, very fulfilling and satisfying. We choose to get married because we believe the benefits of a great relationship outweigh the risks of what could go wrong. God feels the same way about us.

The parent and child relationship is beautifully illustrated in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. God is depicted as the Father who has one faithful son and one rebellious son. God waits patiently and expectantly for his wayward son to return home, and then hosts a great party to celebrate, when his son finally comes home. The apostle Paul often uses this parent and child relationship in his letters. When we come to faith in Jesus Christ we become an adopted child of God. We are welcomed into God's eternal family and we have complete access to God as our Father in heaven.

Why do parents have children? Couples know there are no guarantees that their children will grow up to be responsible adults, whom they can take pride in. Parents know their children will at times be rebellious and not listen to their instruction or follow their example. But that doesn't stop them. The love and joy of raising a child, your own offspring, who carries your genes, is so rewarding and fulfilling that parents are willing to take the risk that their child might become a prodigal son. God feels the same way about us.

This is the kind of love that God has for us. The joy He experiences when people seek him with all their heart, is worth the risk He takes by giving human beings their free will to pursue God or not.

The way that I understand it, is that God had a specific plan that would create creatures that by choice would worship Him only. In Genesis chapter 1 : 1 it reads, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." This appears to be a complete creation. At this time most probably is the era when the dinosaurs roamed this earth. However, Genesis chapter 1 verse 2 reads, "And the earth was void and without form." I believe that gap between verse 1 and verse 2 is when war took place in Heaven.

The Angels had free will and Lucifer the Archangel enlisted one third of the angels in Heaven to side with Him to oust God. They failed to do so and they were cast down to this earth. This is understandable because Satan was on hand when God created the garden of Eden.

The answer is found in Genesis.

Genesis 1:26-27: Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27  So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Before GOD created man He prophesied that man would be created in His image and likeness. But when He creates man He creates them in His image only.

In order for man to be created in His likeness man would have to first choose to be one with Him in Spirit and Truth (John 17:17-23), which is possible through the New Covenant if we are willing to accept His WORD (Yoshua).

When Satan said to Eve, "You will be like GOD knowing good and evil," he was telling the truth.

Genesis 3:22: And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Man was now like GOD knowing good and evil, but He was not in GOD’S likeness, for GOD is Holy and perfect. For man to be in His likeness he would have to choose Truth over lies (GODS WORD is TRUTH).

Because of sin, Adam and Eve were now in the likeness of sinful man, offspring of Satan (Genesis 3:15). It’s for that reason GOD wouldn’t allow them to have access to the tree of life.

From the day sin entered the world man has had the ability to choose life or death, Truth or lies. That is the gospel message; all who choose obedience to the Word of Truth (Yoshua) are choosing life as did Enoch, Noah, Abraham etc. Obedience to the Word of Truth is the gospel message Yoshua and every story in the Law and Prophets taught.

Yoshua said, "I Am the Way, the Life, and the Truth." Yoshua came to show us the Way back to the Father. Yoshua is the bread of life (Tree of Life). Yoshua is the Word of the Father (Truth).

All who choose Yoshua walk as He walked in obedience to His Father (2 John 1:4-6). Those who do, become the bride of Messiah. The purification of Yoshua's bride is the fulfillment of GOD'S prophecy, creating mankind in His “likeness” and image.

Daniel 12:10: Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.

2 Peter 3:14: So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

The gospel Yoshua and His disciples taught was that He came to save us from our sin debt, so we could regain access to the tree of life. Peter sums this all up perfectly:

1 Peter 1:14-23: As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Why did God create Adam and Eve if He knew they would sin? So He would have a bride who chose Him.
