Jesus said he came to fulfill the purpose of the law. What is that purpose?

Good question, Nancie! The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”That is the purpose of the law! The law's function is to show man's sinfulness and need of a Savior. By functioning like a mirror (James 1:23), God's law reveals to us our sinfulness since “by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). Does this help? If not, Nancie, tell me; I have more.

God had given the Law as a standard of perfect righteousness to show what He required of humans in order to abide eternally in His presence, but, at the same time, to also make them realize that perfect obedience to that standard was impossible because of their universal sin. Jesus, as both true God and true man, was the only One who could completely obey God's Law, and then offer Himself as a blood sacrifice that was capable of fully paying the penalty for sin demanded by God on behalf of all humanity, but that was efficacious only for those who would accept that sacrifice through faith, allowing them to appropriate for themselves the salvation and eternal life that He made possible through His death and resurrection.

Great question. He said He came to fulfill both the law and the prophets. Then to ensure His words were not taken out of context, He said He didn’t come to change the law or the prophets. He came to fulfill everything that was written about Him in the law and prophets, and He did. By His fulfilling what was written about Him we can know with certainty He was the Messiah. He does tell us why He came in John 18:32. He says He came to testify to the Truth, which is what Moses’s wrote about Him. Deuteronomy 18:15-19: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die. 17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name."
