I would say that it is because the verse summarizes in such a succinct manner the following principles or ideas: 1. There is a God who created the world and the human race. 2. God wants the people of the world to live forever in His presence, rather than eternally perishing (that is, being forever separated from Him). 3. The people of the world cannot achieve that state by their own actions, due to their universal sinfulness. 4. In an amazingly loving response to that, God was willing to incarnate and sacrifice His only Son to make that eternal life possible through faith in that sacrifice (rather than through any action that people could or can perform) in order to receive eternal life.
