Both grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

This does not mean that there was no law before Moses, or no grace and truth before Jesus Christ. The law itself is truth, and the New Testament is law. There are 1,050 commands in the New Testament. The idea here is that the fullness of grace came by Jesus Christ. One can get today in fullness what men received only in part in Old Testament times.

The question appears to be with regard to the wording of John 1:17 ("The Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.") 

Although all of God's revelation is true, that truth finds its full and final expression in Jesus, who said of Himself later in John's gospel (John 14:6), "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life."

In addition, the Law condemns those unable to comply perfectly with its requirements (which means all people). Jesus was incarnated as the full expression of God's grace (undeserved favor and mercy), in order to provide a means by which people could have eternal life through faith in His redeeming death and resurrection, which satisfied God's judgment against all sins committed under the Law. And those who have that faith in Christ can be assured of this, because Jesus was (and is) the Truth.
