But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” Religious arguments, at least some of them, against same-sex marriage are based upon Old Testament biblical passages such as Genesis 19:4-11, Leviticus 18:22, and Leviticus 20:13, while others are based upon New Testament biblical passages such as Romans 1, I Corinthians 6:8-10, and Jude 1:7. Marriage equality is a legal issue and not a religious one. In the first place, the word "marriage" did not come into our language until the 13th century. Therefore, the word "marriage" never appears in Scripture as we understand the word today. The word has been interpreted into every translation of the Bible. I am not scholarly enough to know exactly what the Hebrew or Greek words are for this status, but I do know that it is not a legal condition. Again, marriage is a legal condition under our current law. The government requires a marriage license, God does not. In Scripture, a man and a woman do not need government approval to marry; the father gives his daughter to the man with terms of agreement. Nowhere in the Bible is government involved in a union of a man and woman. Under the current laws of the United States, one can legally marry a person of their choosing, male or female. Gay marriage is legal, but not mandatory. Church denominations are not forced to marry same-sex couples and neither are preachers. The sanctity of a Biblical union is not compromised by having legal marriage equality. I am much more concerned with my personal relationship with Jesus Christ than I am with marriage equality. Same-sex unions do not threaten or change my beliefs. I thank God that I live in a country where I have the right to follow Jesus Christ and am protected under the law to do just that. My marriage is protected under the law, but, it is also blessed by God.
