In the KJV, the gate-keeper is known as a porter. 2 Samuel 18:26, 1 Chronicles 9:22. They were Levites who had charge over the entrances to the temple. 

The porters, or gate-keepers are in several other scriptures. For example -
1Chronicles 9:17; 15:18. Also you find them in 2Chronicles 23:19. In some places they may be referred to as a "doorkeeper." 1 Chronicles 15:23,24. They were also stationed at the city gates. 

Shepherds were responsible for the Sheepfold. (I think of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.)

In the time of King David the porters of the temple, (guards) numbered 4000. 1 Chronicles 23:5. 

All in all, a very important job.

I also think of Genesis 3:24, "So he drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life." Now my Bible doesn't say they were gate-keepers, porters, but I would think that they are.

Isaiah 25:4, "For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."

Psalm 121: 4,5 - "Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand."

Jesus is our keeper, our porter, our shepherd, our shield defender....everything!

Isn't it great that we find Him right there "In the beginning!"

“At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.” 1 Chronicles 26:18 used to be a trivia verse for me and the young people at the first good church I joined after Jesus saved me. We used to say that 1 Chronicles 26:18 was our favorite Bible verse, not knowing what it really meant. Then our pastor chose it as a verse to base a whole sermon on! This was in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was such a good sermon by such a good pastor that it is one of the reasons that this church is now a megachurch. After an introduction, his 2 points were:

Parbar was a part of Jerusalem near the temple. You could compare it to a suburb. One of the most important tasks assigned to the priestly personal was controlling who came into the temple. Particularly the inner circle. In other words, who came into the sanctuary. Defiling the sanctuary with impurity required a sin offering, and could bring punishment on the individual as well as the people. The gatekeepers had to prevent unqualified intrusion.

There were also many valuable items in the temple. Lots of gold and silver. And the temptation was there. The gatekeepers had to guard against people stealing and bringing in things that would defile the Temple.

They are people who would love to come to this church and steal your belief. Try to present a program that’s not of God. Try to make you believe that you can dress unproperly; dressing like the world. Anything that will defile God’s house.

POINT 1: Everyone has a ministry, a place in God's service. Are you in that place? You say “Now preacher, I’m no minister.” That’s not what I’m saying. You can be a greeter at the front door. That’s a ministry. You can leave a tract at the eating place., You can call someone that you know and that someone is not a born-again Christian, and tell them you're praying for them...On & On we could go.. EVERYONE HAS A MINISTRY.

You may not be able to do physical work, but you can pray. Being a “Prayer Warrior” What a ministry…Praying for your Church, your pastor, and his wife. 

POINT 2: Every job is important. “For lack of a shoe, the horse was lost. For lack of a horse, the battle was lost. For lack of winning the battle, the war was lost.” Little things cause great loses. The space shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986, just 73 seconds after liftoff, bringing a devastating end to the spacecraft’s 10th mission. The disaster claimed the lives of all 7 astronauts.
