Amazing factoid about me: My husband and I have been married for (drumroll, please) almost 35 years! I know–we’re rockstars, right? We’ve beaten some HUGE odds, and we’re pretty darn proud of ourselves. And even better–we are still madly, sickeningly in love with each other, more and more each day. Yes, really.
We often get asked, “What’s your secret?” Well, we have a LOT of them! The most obvious one is, as Dana Carvey’s SNL church lady character would say, “Hmm… I don’t know… could it be… JESUS?” But one secret also fits nicely into this advent series: “Love always wins.”
What does that mean? It means keeping short accounts with each other. It means realizing you’re on the same team, and you need to figure out how to work together. It means learning to let small things go. It means focusing more on the things you love about each other and less on the things you find annoying. It means understanding you’re teammates, not opponents.
God is love, His aim for us is love, His plan for us is love, His method for us is love–it all comes down to seeking love in all situations, and putting love into action.
If you’ve ever been in the middle of someone else’s fight, you can probably see this more clearly. When you’re in that situation, all you want is for those people to get along, to figure it out, and to stop being stupid so you can all go back to the way things used to be before the fight started. That’s how God sees us when we’re being pig-headed: He just wants us to figure things out.
The Message Version of 1 John 4:19 says it perfectly:
“We, though, are going to love – love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first.”
Let love win in your life today.
