The Undeniable Strength Of A Godly Woman

By • November 10 2020

There are lots of good women in the world, but a God-fearing woman is hard to find. She has the strength of the Lord behind her words, His purpose in her heart, and His love flowing through every thought, word, and deed. Truly, to be a woman of God is a life-long journey.

Perhaps you’re lucky enough to have had examples of Godly women in your life, be it your mother, grandmother, or a friend or mentor. Even if you didn’t grow up with good influences, the Word of the Lord can equip you with everything you need to begin your journey – and to keep you on the right path, even when you stray. Let’s take a look at some verses about strong women in the Bible! Take a moment to pray over these words and let them shape your heart in the way only the Holy Spirit can.

Proverbs 31:18-20

“She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.”

You knew Proverbs 31 would make it somewhere on this list, so I decided to jump right in and start with some familiar passages. I love this chapter and how it describes this woman, who is to be an example to all other women. She’s not a wallflower, nor is she passive in her marriage or her community. She’s strong, capable, and knows her mind. She’s a hard worker with a generous heart.

1 Peter 3:3-6

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”

This passage always reminds me of the timelessness of God’s Word. I tend to think it’s our modern society and the culture in affluent, first-world countries that contributes to vanity, but it turns out being vain is part of the human condition and not dependent on time or location. Choosing not to fall into the trap of fleeting beauty is part of what sets a Godly woman apart. Not that women of God aren’t beautiful – far from it! But their beauty and self-worth run so much deeper than “external adorning” as Peter put it.

Philippians 1:6

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

This last verse isn’t gender-specific, but I think it’s just the encouragement we need when faced with our own shortcomings. I don’t know about you, but I often fall into the trap of comparing myself to others. I have to remember that their walk with the Lord is different than my own, and that God is working on different things in their hearts than he is in mine. And when I think about it, that’s actually really beautiful. I’m not the Proverbs 31 woman, but I can learn from her. I’m not my grandmother, who is still encouraging others with her testimony and handwritten letters even at 92 years old, but I can soak up her wisdom. Likewise, I can be a source of wisdom for others, should they ask for my guidance.

I hope these verses were an encouragement to your heart and a good reminder that we women are so special to God. He created us with purpose, intention, and gifts that we get to use for His glory.
