Who Does Christ Say You Are?

By • October 05 2020

What makes up your identity? Physical traits? Perhaps it’s a title like mother, wife, or sister. Maybe your identity is wrapped up in your job and always pushing for the next promotion. Scripture tells us that the moment we accept Christ’s sacrifice and invite Him to be Lord of our lives, our identity lies with Him.

But what does that mean, exactly? This can be a vague and at times confusing concept, even for those who grew up in the church. Discovering who you are in Christ – who God Himself created you to be – is a lifelong journey. It’s more than just reading the Word and highlighting verses, it’s putting your confidence in the Lord and trusting Him with your past, present, and future.

With that in mind, let’s look at a few verses that speak to who we are in Christ. Remember, we’re not simply claiming these verses and promises for ourselves, we’re letting the living Word of God shape our hearts and lives.

A New Creation

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10

And to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 4:24

Set Apart

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. – 1 Peter 2:9

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:5

The LORD set apart the godly for himself. The LORD will answer when I call to him. – Psalm 4:3

God’s Children

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. – John 1:12

For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. – Galatians 3:6

And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. – Romans 8:17

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. – Romans 8:1

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. – Ephesians 1:7

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. – 2 Corinthians 5:21

There are so many other verses that proclaim our identity in Christ. Take some time to study scripture for yourself and keep a journal of what scripture has to say about the subject!
