I live in the most beautiful state in the union: Washington. I bet you thought I was going to say Hawaii, didn’t you? Or maybe Florida, California, or somewhere else where it’s warm most of the year? Well, all I have to say is that Washington rivals every one of those states in so many ways: Two majestic mountain ranges, a glorious coastline dotted with the San Juan Islands in the north, lush foliage growing so abundantly that our nickname is “The Evergreen State,” and a wide variety of biosystems ranging from desert to rainforest.
One of my favorite places to visit here is Snoqualmie Falls up in the Cascade Mountain range. Towering walls of mossy rocks and persistent plant life create a breathtaking backdrop as powerful showers of white water spill over the top of the falls and into the welcoming canyon, roaring, as if to say, “Bombs away!” Even though the scene doesn’t change much as you watch, there is something mesmerizing about witnessing this bounteous flow of melting snow and storm waters yielding to the laws of gravity.
There’s a secret to the things God created: They contain hidden messages for us. When I look at the falls, listen to the roar, and sometimes catch a bit of spray in my face as falling water meets flowing water below in the Snoqualmie River, I can’t help but be reminded of the thundering flow of God’s love for us.
This is what the Bible says about His love poured out for us:
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” (1 John 3:1, ESV)
God’s love is lavished upon us in a formidable, unstoppable, relentless, refreshing, life-giving, clamorous flow. If you can’t picture it right now, get yourself to a waterfall–or Google it if you don’t live in an incredible state like Washington–and witness it for yourself. But don’t forget the most important part: Remember that God wants to pour out His love on you just like that.
