Love Fights for You: Advent Day 18

By • December 18 2019

Warning: I’m going to give you an ear worm right now: “We all need somebody to le-e-ean on.” These words, so soulfully recorded by Bill Withers many decades ago, are well known all around the world–and still true today. Who is your go-to person (or people), the one(s) you lean on, count on, confide your deepest secrets and fears to, look to when you need a lift?

It feels good to know you have someone in your corner, doesn’t it? But what happens when the people you depend on most can’t be there for you? We are all finite beings, and we have our limitations.

But never fear, Jesus is here! And He is near! (Sorry, I teach first graders, and rhyming words are always running through my head.) And not only is Jesus here for you and near to you, He is actually fighting on your behalf. Don’t believe me? Here are some of my favorite Bible verses that confirm this fact (all verses are from ESV):

Exodus 14:14: “The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

2 Chronicles 20: 17: “You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.”

Hebrews 7:23-25: “The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

I love it! He is fighting for you, He is with you, and He is even praying for you. With God on your side, you’ll always have someone to lean on.
