Many believe the account of Lazarus and the rich man is a parable. I personally believe the Lord was giving testimony to an actual event. Although Christ told many parables, this is the only recital where he used proper nouns (Lazarus, Abraham).

I do not believe Christ was suggesting that anyone would have a desire to travel from paradise to hell. He was indicating the finality of death. Once physical life ceases the die has been cast and there are no second chances. 

Some would have us believe that the unsaved are annihilated in hell yet scripture shows that the rich man was conscious, was tormented and had a concern for the salvation of his living relatives.

It is especially sobering to read Abraham's response to the rich man's request that he send Lazarus to warn his brothers.

Luke 16:31 "And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."

How true this is today! The only one who can save us from sin, death and hell, the Lord Jesus died, was buried then arose from the grave to pay for mankind's sin yet many do not believe. They defiantly reject God's substitutionary sacrifice and face an eternal state "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched." (Mark 9:44)
