According to Jesus, the meaning is this: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."--Matthew 23:12 According to Peter, the meaning is this: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you," (1 Peter 5:6). According to Warren Wiersbe, to humble yourself means to confess our sins, weep over them [James 4:9], and turn from them.

To humble ourselves is to realize we are all still sinners and if Jesus had not paid the penalty for all sin, no one would be saved. First John 1:8. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. We are still in the flesh and the flesh can not be made perfect. Only the Spirit. Humility is knowing we are still sinners, but the blood of Jesus covers us from all sin. Romans 4:7-8.Blessed is the man whose sins are covered, blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Humility is the opposite of pride. Pride says, thank God I am not like those sinners. Pharisee. Humility. God be merciful to me a sinner. Publican. We are all sinners to a degree because we can not be made perfect in the flesh. Humility is knowing that if it was not for Jesus shedding His own blood for our sins, we could not be saved. Humility is apart from boasting. Romans 3:26-28 For He is the just and the justifier of them that believe in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of faith. Therefore we concluded a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. Romans 11:6 All grace, no works. You can not boast in free. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace ye are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.
