We deserve nothing from God because of our sin. Despite that, He, in His mercy, has taken the initiative to call us to be His children and to live in His presence forever through faith in Christ's atoning death and resurrection. That calling cost Him dearly in the suffering and death of His only-begotten Son.

Since God has placed such a high value on calling and saving those who have faith in Christ, we, in turn, should live in a manner that is pleasing to Him and that reflects our gratitude to Him for the grace (undeserved favor) and love that He has shown us.

Although we are saved by faith (rather than works), we should seek to obey His commandments and live in a manner that is pleasing to Him (despite the times -- as long as we are still in this life and in this fallen world -- that we will fall short in those efforts, for which we should then seek His forgiveness for Jesus' sake).

This is a good question, Bob, What does it mean to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received"?

It means we walk united (Eph. 4:1-16), pure (Eph. 4:17-5:17),
harmonious (Eph. 5:18-6:9), and victorious (Eph. 6:10-24). See Warren Wiersbe's lengthy chapter on this called "Ephesians 4:1-16
LET’S WALK TOGETHER."
