What is the best teaching bible for a 9 year old to start with?

She has had a small child's version and wants more answers. My study bible is too advanced for her.

Personally, I would give her a study Bible like yours. I have grandchildren and have given them the same study Bible my wife and I use. They know when "sleeping over" at Papa and Ne-ne's house they will be expected to bring their Bible.

For the younger ones who are just learning to read it is much easier for them to turn to a specific page number than to look up individual Books. As we read and come to a verse with cross reference to other scripture we stop reading, call their attention to it and turn to the passage. Not only for a new student but for the older ones as well, this prevents us from coming up with a "private interpretation", allowing scripture to rightfully be its best interpreter. (1 Peter 1:20-21) and Isaiah (28:10,13).

The Lord gave me the honor of introducing a 9 year-old grandson to the saving gospel and the Lord saved him. Although still 100% boy and getting worse (Ha!) It amazes me how much sound reasoning he now has at age 11.
A few months back were reading the Christmas story and comparing Matthew and Luke's accounts. After finishing I usually set a little time aside for Q & A. I asked my grandson if he understood the significance of the incarnation and virgin birth. Without hesitation he responded: "Sure Papa, if he had a Daddy like everyone else he would be no different from us, he would be a sinner and not God". I shouted "PRAISE" GOD" so loud it scared him! Talking about a proud Papa!. Praise God!

On another occasion we were discussing all the modern day false prophets along with their predictions and forecasts concerning Christ's return. We turned to Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."
My grandson remarked: "If I understand this right, even if someone predicted the exact date and it came true, based on the Bible he would be a false prophet because only God knows the day". I let out another hearty Amen (but not as loud as the other time). I said: Son, there are people who have been going to church for 40 years who do not comprehend what you just stated. Your faith and reasoning is based on what God actually said. (No, we haven't studied apologetics).

My point is this, do not sell your 9 year old short. Especially on their ability to comprehend and reason. Our responsibility is to prayerfully teach them, share God's Word with them on a consistent basis. Kids are like a sponge and although sinners from conception they are not encumbered with all the struggles of life and the sinful attitudes, thoughts and practices we adults have. The Lord Jesus said: "..........Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein." (Mark 10:14-15)

Remember the story of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 9? He had apparently purchased a scroll of Isaiah 53 which he was reading and was on his way back home. The Spirit spoke to Phillip telling him to go to him. Phillip asked the eunuch if he understood what he was reading. V. 31 " And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him."

Again, if you have a good study Bible get a copy for your 9 year-old. You will always (literally) be on the "same page".
