Jesus’ words to the Pharisees in Matt. 23:23 raise the issue of tithing. Should Christians today pay tithes, or are we free from that practice? For that matter, what is a tithe? The word means “a tenth part.” In the OT, God commanded the Israelites to give tithes—one-tenth of their produce or income—for one of three reasons:
