Romans 8:15
15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.Or adoption And by him we cry, “Abba,Aramaic for Father Father.”
We have to keep in mind that the kind of fear Paul is referring to is the fear of condemnation in light of the penalty humans are due for the guilt of our sin (which is personal, willful, and always 'crouching at the door'). All of us, as believers, will go through trials where either our consciences (when we are weaker in faith) or demonic forces will remind us that we are guilty before God on our own. There is a godly kind of sorrow (see 2 Cor. 7) which leads us to heartfelt repentance, but excessive sorrow over already-forgiven sins is a dangerous distraction. The Spirit does not lead us to lives full of guilt and shame, but makes us into thankful children because we remember what Jesus has done on our behalf -- and as we see later in this chapter, there is no one who can truly condemn us if God has justified us by the blood of Christ.

Judges 6:5
5They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count the men and their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it.
Isn't this type of story so ingrained within American culture? We live in relative safety, but there are many examples of the fear of losing our freedom in the media, in movies, and in pop culture. Anyone could connect with this kind of passage, because it tells of experience that is readily available to our imagination.
