John 19:30
30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The Greek word for "It is finished" is tetelestai. This word is in the perfect tense, something unheard of in the English lanuage. It conveys a simple past tense, but the results of that past action continuing forever. When Jesus says, "It is finished", He's really saying that the work He did on the cross has been completed (simple past tense), but the RESULTS of that completed action (i.e., His death) will continue forever! Isn't it nice to know that Jesus' work on the cross isn't over. The result of His death and subsequent resurrection have continuous and ever-lasting action that continues forever into eternity. Pretty cool.
