Chapter 2 By Grace Through Faith 1And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

One of the best summations of the unity of grace, faith, and works. We are saved by the grace of God, which we accept through faith so that we might fulfill the purpose that God created us for - doing good works.

This verse highlights one of the tragedies of abortion: part of God's plan doesn't come to fruition.

Faith is NOT the gift! "by grace" and "through faith" are prepositional phrases describing how the gift of salvation is acquired. (To be Continued)

This is one of my favorite passages because it so clearly lays out the relationship between salvation, faith, and works. We are saved through God's favor (which we did not earn) through faith in Jesus' work (what He did for us); now that we are already saved we should live out our faith by good deeds. Trying to rely on any of our own deeds to deserve heaven is not really relying on Jesus at all.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourself, it is the GIFT of God- NOT BY WORKS, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, CREATED in Christ Jesus to DO GOOD WORKS, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
In other words, good works are worthless in meriting God's favor. However, as God's creation in Christ Jesus, we are to do good works.
